| A “proof” is a specimen striking of coins for presentation, souvenir, and exhibition or collecting purposes. Proof coins can usually be distinguished by their sharpness of detail, high wire edge, and extremely brilliant, mirror like surface. Sets from 1936-1972 include the cent, nickel, dime, quarter, and half dollar; from 1973-1981 the dollar coin was also added 1982-1998 had no dollar coin as none were minted. The Silver Proof Sets became available again in 1992. |

Official Mint Sets are specially packaged by the government for sale to collectors. They contain uncirculated coins of each year for every denomination issued from each mint. Unlike proof sets, these are normal coins intended for circulation. |
